This painting, hung in the interior of Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis, depicts one of the church’s eponymous patron saints, King Louis IX, receiving into his hands the crown of thorns from the glorified Christ. Paintings were a common element used in the interior design of Baroque churches, with Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis containing a number of similar such works located both in its side chapels and around its main altar.
