This altar is a later addition, meant to adhere to the modern liturgical reforms instituted in the Catholic liturgy under Pope Paul VI, which instruct that mass should be celebrated versus populum, that is, facing the people. The church's traditional altar - dating from the 19th century - is still visible in the background.
